Malivoire Wine Company
The architecture of Malivoire's unique gravity-fed winery operation on the Beamsville hillside is as unique and distinctive as its specialty VQA wines. (Photos: Alex Ayotte and Ian Wood)
Malivoire's first vineyard, the "Moira", was purchased in 1995. A year later a second and larger property was acquired only a short distance to the west, which would become the site of the winery. Between 1995 and 2000, close to 50 acres were planted to Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Gamay and Pinot Noir. Malivoire produces 100% VQA wines and has a wonderful wine boutique and wine tasting bar. The winery's small batches of handcrafted wines are purchased primarily by private customers and restaurants in Ontario. Tours of Malivoire's unique "gravity winery" are available throughout the year by appointment. Email if you would like to subscribe to their e-mail newsletter that will alert you to their special events and limited edition wine releases. Anyone can sign up for it at no charge.

Malivoire's vineyards are farmed with sustainability in mind. In their farming practices, Malivoire chose not to use quick-fix chemical solutions to vineyard challenges. They recognized that if it is possible to meet natural obstacles effectively with natural solutions, the vineyards will thrive, and this conservative approach to the use of biocides and fertilizers is still employed wherever possible. Through such methods as harvesting by hand, Malivoire minimizes the use of heavy machinery in their vineyards.
Native flower gardens line the drive and entrance to the winery. When it was being established a horticulturist was hired to plant native flowers and shrubs which are well established now, providing habitat and food for song birds and butterflies. Native plantings take less water than foreign species once they are established, and have evolved to survive local insects and plant diseases; hence they can flourish without excessive use of pesticides and fungicides.
